What it is
Abhyanga is the traditional external application of oil with massage. The oil, pressure and treatment area depend on an individual assessment.
Traditional purpose
Traditionally used in Ayurveda for relaxation and bodily comfort. It is not a substitute for evaluating persistent pain or other symptoms.
Typical process
Following a consultation, the practitioner explains the selected oil and massage approach. Comfort, skin response and temperature should be monitored throughout.
Preparation
Tell the clinician about allergies, skin conditions, recent injuries, pregnancy and current medication. Follow the clinic’s individual instructions about meals and clothing.
After-care
Rest as advised and report any skin irritation, dizziness or unusual discomfort.
Important precautions
Massage may be unsuitable over inflamed or injured skin, during acute illness or with certain circulatory conditions. The clinician must assess suitability.
Professional assessment is required before therapy. These descriptions are educational and are not instructions for home treatment.
